5 Advantages a bald man has when walking

January 1, 2012

Medical / Physical reasons why a bald man SHOULD have an advantage when walking

1. Less weight on the head = more overall speed

2. Less air resistance = more speed

3. Less likely to sweat = less dehydration = able to walk longer distances without getting thirsty

4. Androgenic hair loss pattern = more testosterone = Qawi. Each step has extra strength which leads to increased distance.

5. Aerodynamically more stable. More hair on one said may lead to shift of balance on one leg, slowing down overall speed.

The HOLY SHIT Sign

December 10, 2011

Will the stories ever finish in this place.  Hope not, gives me plenty to write about!

There are some jobs where you can mess up, forget to do something, and well end of the day you wasted time / money or a bit of both.  Replenish-able stuff.

Dont think you can “replenish” your DAD if I forget to do something, mess up while doing something, or something happens when im doing something to him!  Dont think you’d be too happy either.

A guy came to the ED at 10:45pm, tummy pain and vomiting.  Generally, we tend to XRAY / ECG the majority of patients who make it through the offices to the observation units.  Especially with a presentation such as that, because tummy pain can mean either

-Tummy pain

or

-Heart pain

What a waste of medical terminology.  ”heart pain and tummy pain” .. Sigh, anyway

Which is why we do a quick Heart, Lung and Abdomen examination.  Then we follow that with xrays and ecgs to further investigate the patient.

Tummy pain in most cases would be covered with an xray, and heart pain well an ECG would cover it a lot of the time.

So this old baba, fresh in at 10:45pm was passed by the ED doctor (im talking about the guys who travelled from far and beyond to ply their trade here to make money and remain 40 years outdated in medicine) to the cardiologist (heart doctor) who insisted this issue wasnt a cardiac problem.

So then, when you dont know who to pass it onto, you can always call the medics because they’ll take about anything.  So, he was passed onto a medical physician at 9:30am the next day.  You following me so far?

The medical physician ordered a chest xray because, well, poor guy didnt have one.

The chest xray was seen at 2pm before I went home at the end of my MORNING shift.

This is what we saw

Holy Shit

Now lets forget that the guy has a heart half the size of his entire chest, thats ok cuz its not an “acute” thing to deal with.

Whats a bloody SURGICAL EMERGENCY is what we call “air under the diaphragm”, thats the space between that “white line” I marked and the white stuff underneath.  Thats AIR, and its not meant to be there.  Its usually hard to spot because the amount of air is small barely visible under the diaphragm.  In that photo, its umm.. well quite clear!

The air usually means some organ inside perforated and gas is escaping into an area it shouldnt.  In short, patients DIE from this, young or old and need to be taken to the operating theatre ASAP.

This dude was gassing up from 10:45pm the day before and is LUCKY to be even alive the next afternoon!!

All this could have been avoided if that dumbass just felt his stomach or xrayed his chest.

But hey-ho is the way some people work.. 9-5 pm job eh?

You dont need to be a medic to tell me whats wrong here.

Any guesses people? There are approximately 4+ things to see.

1 MAJOR thing you shouldnt miss

(this is a real patient. No details of course).

Kuwait Cinema – Unexpected History

November 25, 2011

To be honest I never realised Kuwaits cinema had such history!

We had stars like Um Kalthoom have her FIRST show outside of Egypt perform in Kuwait.

James Brown in his peak years performed here as well.

Time should improve things, but as with everything else in Kuwait, it appears to be “Old is Gold”.

Here some pictures I took when I was at the movies the other day. I should have taken more, they had original seats from the 60′s and the old projector cameras they used, as well as the development of the cinema to its modern self, but check these out.

My 2 fils

November 25, 2011 — 1 Comment

Well, dont think we’re in much danger when we tweet now since thats what everyone is talking about on a regular basis.

Before, people used to go “Hey! How are you! Nice weather today huh?” when they see their mates.

Now its along the lines of “Hey! Enjoying your new salary?” or “Hey! Those folk who entered parliament eh?”

Ridiculous.. its sad really.  People forget what our fathers and grandfathers (and grandmothers) built.

And yes, we CAN use the term “sweat and blood” here.

We went through war together, and got through it.

We’re a tiny country with a loud voice (for the next 50 years anyway).

Our history speaks for itself.  We have achieved.

We boasted about democracy in our region.  True democracy.

We are religious, yet open minded.

We havent sold our soul to the west, neither have we been stubborn with our roots.

In short

We are blessed.

But, why do I feel like crying about whats happening to Kuwait right now?

Why do I feel right now, that this country is close to crying?

How are we allowing ourselves to do this to our country?  What do we have if we dont have Kuwait?

To whats happened regarding the salaries of everyone in Kuwait, I use the words of a wise man:

A ‘No’ uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a ‘Yes’ merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble. -Mohandas Gandhi

And with regards to the violence that escalated recently, authority need to remember:

Object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.

Thats just my humble 2 fils on the issues.

Pee Yourself

November 16, 2011

It really does frustrate me.  It honestly does, and im glad im not alone in this.

I am truly convinced we are not far behind the west in terms of knowledge, education etc.. We certainly have the resources.  What we lack is the work ethic and morality that is involved in what we do.

But what happened a few days back was taking the piss.  Literally.

A patient came in, like many others do in our line of work, with what we call an “open-book pelvic fracture”

Basically, their pelvis looks like this in an xray (note: this is not the patients xray)

Normal Pelvis Xray

Open Book Fracture of the Pelvis

Its called an open book, because well, its quite obvious, it looks like you’ve opened the pelvis like a book.  This patient is obviously not in any state to move.

What shocked me was this.  Speaking to one of the specialities actively involved in the direct care of this patient, I asked politely whether they were planning on inserting a urinary catheter (a tube into the urethra so the patient can literally pee into a bag).

“Does the patient need to pee now?”

Me: “Yes, shes quite desperate”

“She can pee herself”

Me: “Excuse me?  You’ve got to be joking?”

“Its not the most important thing right now.  Oh well, get her a bed pan if you really want to help”

A bed pan, im all for it!  But dude, the patient CANNOT MOVE to pee on the bed pan underneath her!

Have we literally gotten THIS bad?  Pee herself??  Seriously?

Dont worry though, we sorted her out and got one of the friendly urologists to insert a urinary catheter in the end.

Pee herself… Bloody hell.

Met the relative of the guy who had his car accident at 140km/hr, with his permission, he allowed me to post these photos up here.

By the way, I visited the guy in hospital. He’s alive and well, moving both his legs! He’ll need a lot of physiotherapy to get back to normal, but thats a lot better than what he came in with!

Shocking

Check your “Breaks”

November 6, 2011

Driving 140 km/hr is 20 km/hr above the speed limit.. not much

The injuries it can cause.. Horrendous.

Had a guy come in with that just that, hit a post at 140km/hr

Back pain, pain when breathing, and peeing blood

Not CRAZY bad symptoms considering his accident.  But then we did a full body CT scan and..

The Full Body Ct Scan

Ok, apparently you needed some guidance..

1. He had multiple rib fractures

2. Damaged Liver + Both kidneys

3. Fracture of the thoracic vertebral columns from T6 to T10 (they go from 1 – 12)

4. The tough one: The one in the CT scan above shows a “Burst Fracture”.  As the name implies, its a type of fracture that in short describes the bone had “burst”, like a balloon.  And a bony fragment was compressing his spinal cord, which in lay mans terms mean he might not be able to walk for life, unless its removed.

5. A tear across his rectum, meaning he will need a colostomy bag (a bag placed on your abdomen so you can “poo” into it).

This kid was 20 years old.

Slow it down people, seriously.

Think of your family.
